The Department of Aerospace Engineering at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign invites applications for a full-time Professor of Practice (equivalent to a Clinical Professor) position of any rank (open-rank, full-time). The successful candidate will join the department's thriving community of faculty and will make a significant impact on aerospace engineering education by providing instruction to graduate and undergraduate students based on their knowledge gained from practical, real-world experience. One position is planned to complement current practical expertise in the department in spacecraft and aircraft design, including, but not limited to, areas such as guidance, navigation, and control, aerospace systems, materials and structures, aerodynamics and propulsion, embedded systems, human spaceflight, and aerospace medicine. The candidate will instruct the capstone design course in the undergraduate curriculum, and/or fundamental courses in aerospace engineering and aerospace systems, and project-based courses associated with their respective area of expertise. In addition to teaching and contributing to laboratory instruction, the successful candidate will hold office hours and provide academic advising to a subset of students in the department. The candidate will be provided further opportunities to develop a research program associated with their expertise and mentor and advise graduate research students. Since the instructional domain of this position will cover the overall practical aspects of aerospace vehicle systems, the candidate must have a background in more than one topic associated with aerospace engineering such as: aircraft design, spacecraft design, aerospace systems, applied computational methods, orbital mechanics, aerodynamics, propulsion, flight mechanics, controls, spacecraft testing, flight testing, structures, and a willingness to learn those areas with which they are unfamiliar.

All candidates should have at least a B.S. in Aerospace Engineering or a related field, but a Masters or PhD in Aerospace Engineering or a related field is desired. An ideal candidate would also have experience teaching aerospace engineering courses and mentoring and advising students and/or early career professionals. Candidates must exhibit exceptional promise and have been involved in aerospace research and development programs in academic, industry or government organizations, consistent with being a productive member of a R&D team. Experience should ideally include significant contribution to programs that have led to flight hardware and scholarly impact. Ideal candidates will demonstrate evidence of a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion through teaching and/or professional service endeavors. This is a renewable non-tenure track position appointed on a 9-month service basis. The proposed start date is August 16, 2022; however, placement may be adjusted depending on the needs of the organization. Salary is commensurate with experience and qualifications.
