Primary Purpose of the Job: The Micromill Senior Staff Technician will be responsible for the operation of the pilot line and further processing of sheet samples including cold rolling heat treating and aging to specified tempers. The pilot line consists of two parts; the front end which contains the melt shop through the caster and the back end which contains all equipment after the caster including hot rolling. The Senior Staff Technician will need to independently schedule and run experiments working closely with engineers. This will be primarily responsible for melt shop area with additional duties in support of the caster set-up and turnaround operations. This will also be expected to demonstrate capability for operation of the line through the Human Machine Interface (HMI) control system with initial responsibility in the Hot Mill section of the line. The incumbent will need to function as a team member supporting the other on the pilot line. Initial activity will be Al-alloy based but future work will involve different base metals systems e.g. Mg Cu and Ti. Major Activities / Key Challenges: Responsible for caster preparation prior to operation (e.g. melt shop caster rolls metal delivery tip building) and turnaround for next cast Responsible for melt preparation for delivery of high quality metal prior to casting. Responsible for scrap melting and scrap sales to maximize value back to the project Responsible for maintaining furnace and caster in excellent operating condition. Manage metal inventory to maintain sufficient consumables (e.g. prime hardeners ) on hand to ensure uninterrupted casting operation. Responsible for safe operation of the Hot Mill section of the line through the HMI control system. Become familiar with the safe operation of the Caster section of the line through the HMI control system Responsible for safe operation of the full line to produce sheet specimens for further processing. Develop work schedule to produce results from the caster as efficiently as possible. Support development and maintenance of PEHSR and SWI documentation. Support further processing of sheet samples to final product including; cold rolling heat treating aging partial annealing and stabilizing. Support characterization of materials produced from caster including; mechanical testing microstructure analysis Prepare presentations and assist in writing formal reports as needed to engineers scientists and managers within the Micromill group. Essential Knowledge and Skills / Education: Strong communication organizational and time management skills. Demonstrated ability to work independently with little or no guidance. Demonstrated ability to collaborate and work well with others as part of a team. Understanding of hazards associated with molten metal. Molten metal experience. Ability to take initiative and know how to resolve problems to their root cause quickly and efficiently. Understanding of both heat treatable and non-heat treatable alloys. Experience with hot and cold rolling. Writing skills and reporting. Basic High School Diploma or GED 5 years of experience with molten metal and casting Employees must be legally authorized to work in the United States. Verification of employment eligibility will be required at the time of hire. Visa sponsorship is not available for this position. Preferred Experience with the operation of continuous casting processes Familiarity with hot and cold rolling
