Description, duties, responsibilities
Responsible for the operation and management of the ASC Helicopter Operations Workcenter at McMurdo Station. Manages the daily flight scheduling and support operation for Air Center Helicopters, Inc. (ACHI) aircraft on contract for the United States Antarctic Program (USAP). Responsible for planning ACHI support for the season and utilizing awareness of support requirements and the National Science Foundation (NSF)’s mission priorities to execute approved requests. Interfaces with flight crews, grantees, NSF, Department of the Interior - Office of Aviation Services (DOI-OAS), Naval Information War Center (NIWC), field camps, ASC work centers, foreign programs or other visiting helicopters, and any other requisite agencies to accomplish USAP’s on-continent aviation support requirements. Plans and leads twice-weekly Helicopter Operations Planning (HOP) meetings for the NSF and other key stakeholders.
- Responsible for planning, scheduling, and implementing United States Antarctic Program (USAP) helicopter-supported field activities based out of McMurdo Station.
- Develops the helicopter portion of the annual USAP Air Operations Planning Summary (AOPS).
- Prepares and presents helicopter operations information at annual aviation PMR and other meetings or via reports as required.
- Defines the next season's USAP and Antarctica New Zealand (AntNZ) helicopter-related logistical requirements based on NSF priorities; forecasts and allocates the number of hours required for helicopter operations.
- Assists with out-year planning and proposal supportability reviews for any programmatic helicopter use.
- Evaluates supportability of in-season helicopter operations requests as they arise and at the direction of NSF and/or Field management.
- Hires, supervises, and provides training/direction to Aviation Operations Coordinator(s).
- Serves as the ASC POC for helicopter-supported science groups, the NSF, other ASC departments, and other USAP agencies. Attends pre-season science support reviews, on-ice science support meetings and other operational meetings. Ensures planned support requirements have been met prior to grantees’ arrival at McMurdo.
- Prepares helicopter operations portions of Support Information Packets (SIPs), Research Support Plans (RSPs), and Science Program Plan documents.
- Provides implementation support for ACHI.
- Coordinates with appropriate ASC Facilities and Operations personnel to ensure facility de-winterization and operational support are in-line for season start-up.
- Coordinates with Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S) in the preparation of Environmental Assessments for field operations, including fuel caches, drilling projects, and any environmentally sensitive activities to be conducted in the field.
- Coordinates support for aircraft, passengers, and cargo from visiting and other National Antarctic Programs’ helicopters coming to McMurdo Station.
- Develops, publishes, and oversees the implementation of the daily flight schedule and twice-weekly Helicopter Operations Planner.
- Leads the twice-weekly Helicopter Operations Planning (HOP) meetings to provide information to NSF and key stakeholders.
- Responsible for keeping flight crews informed about scheduling and delays that affect their flights; coordinates with ACHI site manager on flight support changes.
- Coordinates daily with AntNZ helicopter operations while deployed; responsible for ensuring AntNZ-NSF quid-pro-quo support is maintained and reported to the NSF.
- Responsible for understanding ACHI airframe capabilities as related to flight and cargo planning; executes efficient aircraft scheduling.
- Maintains accurate hours records; provides hours actuals reports and ensures geographic coordinates documentation occurs at the direction of the Aviation Operations Manager.
- Coordinates with DOI-OAS, ACHI, and ASC FS&T staff to coordinate annual STEP training.
- Maintains communication with field parties and/or field camps as required. This responsibility includes overseeing any changes in support requirements to relevant agencies.
- Utilizes Google Earth, AFF, and other flight tracking software to monitor aircraft movements.
- Reports aviation-related incidents and near misses in a timely manner.
- Ensures compliance with applicable Safety, Environmental, Health, and Waste Management policies/procedures and ensures that safety is the highest priority in the workplace.
- Interacts directly with National Science Foundation, Air Center Helicopters, Inc., DOI-OAS counterparts, and other agency officials in a professional and tactful manner.
- Performs other duties as required.
Required Education, Experience, Certificates and Licenses:
- BS/BA in relevant field. Three years additional experience may be accepted in lieu of a degree.
- Four years of experience which includes two years of aviation-related and logistical planning and coordination experience.
- Supervisory experience and proven ability to lead a team.

- Familiarity with weather reporting preferred.
Physical and/or Other Requirements:
- Willingness and ability to deploy to Antarctica for extended periods
- Successful completion of Medical and Dental examinations required by the NSF for deployment to Antarctica
- Successful completion of drug screening and background check required by employer
- Successful completion of Federal Background Check required by the NSF
- Must be willing and able to lift and move items, parts, assemblies, and equipment up to the safety regulation maximum as required by the position.
- Must be willing and able to perform physical activities including heavy lifting, climbing in and out of equipment, crawling, and working outdoors in extreme cold as required by the position.
- Must participate in community programs, such as “house-mouse” (chores), “daisy-picking” (cleaning-up around the station), recycling efforts & safety objectives.
- Valid Driver’s License issued in the United States
