Understanding DoD SkillBridge in the Marine Corps
Over the course of my 20 years in the Marine Corps, I saw some pretty significant changes in how Marines transitioned out. The Marine Corps expanded and revised its transition assistance programs, complying with federal directives and evolving into what is currently the transition readiness program. One very popular tool now available is called SkillBridge. The DoD SkillBridge program is relatively new, and the Marine Corps has allowed separating Marines to benefit from it on their way back into civilian life.
Mastering Crosswind Landings: Techniques and Tips for Pilots
Landing an aircraft is an essential skill for every pilot; it demands precision and practice, especially when dealing with variables that change from landing to landing. One of the biggest variables is the wind, which varies in both speed and direction. The complexity of crosswind landings comes from the need to maintain runway alignment, or centerline, while counteracting the sideways drift caused by winds pushing you to the side. As the aircraft descends, pilots have to manage the appropriate controls inputs to ensure the plane lands not only on the centerline, but also facing straight down the runway at touchdown rather than pointed to one side or the other. Landing with a crosswind is one of the trickier skills many pilots take the longest to perfect.

V-speeds are standard terms used to define airspeeds that are critical for the safe operation of all aircraft. These speeds are derived from data obtained during flight testing and are essential for pilots to understand and memorize. Knowing V-speeds ensures that a pilot can continue to fly the aircraft safely throughout all phases of flight, including takeoff, climb, cruise, descent, and landing.

How VA Disability Benefits Impact an FAA Medical Certificate for Veteran Pilots
Veteran pilots who receive VA disability benefits face an increasingly complex landscape when seeking FAA medical certification. Recent FAA investigations have highlighted the importance of transparency in disclosing VA benefits on medical applications. As part of its "Special Project," the FAA has been cross-referencing VA disability benefits with pilot medical certifications, leading to Letters of Investigation and, in some cases, the revocation of certificates for nondisclosure. While some pilots have received Letters of Correction, allowing them to amend their applications, others have faced more severe penalties, with inconsistencies in the FAA's handling of these cases becoming more apparent as of 2023. Understanding how VA disability benefits and related medical conditions impact the FAA medical certification process is crucial for veteran pilots to maintain their flying status. This article explores the nuances of FAA medical requirements, offering guidance on navigating this challenging process.
